School Governors
The governing body at Moat Hall is made up of parents, staff, community members and a member appointed by the local authority. As governors we are not involved in the day-to-day running of the school; instead we attend meetings to read and scrutinise reports and then visit school to see the impact of our work...
As governors we have three main roles:
Setting the school's vision, ethos and strategic direction;
Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; and
Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
In addition to the main roles above as governors we regularly meet to oversee and scrutinise decisions about finance, the curriculum, staffing, undertake reviews of policy, set targets and carefully monitor performance to ensure standards are maintained or improved.
The priorities we have set this year as a governing body are:
To provide a safe environment for our children to learn during the current pandemic
To support our children in their return to school and minimise the impact of the lockdown on their education
To continue to grow and develop our early year provision
To carefully manage the schools finances during Covid.
To manage these priorities, we meet regularly as a governing body. We have continued to meet throughout lockdown using online meeting platforms and will continue to do so for the rest of the year. When we need to look at topics in greater detail we have link governors with a specific responsibilities and expertise to scrutinise those areas. Being a Governor is voluntary and involves regular meetings, at least every month. We have legal duties and responsibilities and and we discuss and debate decisions before acting as a whole governing body, not individually. All Governors are elected for a 4 year period and have equal voting rights. Being a Governor is demanding but rewarding. Becoming a Governor
Being a governor is a voluntary role. Our aim is to deliver our vision that the children of Moat Hall primary get the best possible education, that they are happy and safe and enjoy their time at school. We support the headteacher and the staff of the school but also at times hold them to account and challenge them to ensure that we deliver our objectives.
Our role differs from that of the headteacher. The governing body works at the strategic level, setting objectives and policy, whereas the headteacher has an operational role and is responsible for delivering the policies and meeting our objectives. As governors we make our decisions following discussions which we record in the minutes of our meetings; the head teacher manages the school using their professional judgement.
Governing bodies vary in their size and make up. Generally they are made up of representatives from the community, the local authority, parents of children at the school and staff members.
