At Moat Hall, we do not currently follow any maths schemes. Instead, we plan and teach from the National Curriculum, adapting our planning daily to suit the needs of the children. Our teaching follows the mastery approach, where we teach challenging objectives and use concrete and pictorial resources to support this. Arithmetic is taught explicitly every week. Autumn term is used to ensure that our children have a deep understanding of number and operations. Times tables are a focus across the school and our children benefit from regular access to Times Tables Rockstars which increases their speed and accuracy. All of the areas of problem solving and reasoning are taught and modelled and our children are regularly exposed to open-ended maths problems and investigations. Fun Maths Friday allows our children to experience maths in a range of fun, unusual contexts. Our maths teaching is supported with weekly homework which focuses on basic skills. Our teachers use assessment for learning to constantly assess the progress of the children; this assessment is supported by termly summative assessments where PUMA assessments are used to provide us with scaled scores.
